Derbyshire IT whiz-kid used work laptop for sexually explicit chat with 14-year-old girl
![Derbyshire IT whiz-kid used work laptop for sexually explicit chat with 14-year-old girl]()
A HIGH-FLYING IT specialist used his works laptop to contact a 14-year-old girl and make sexually explicit remarks to her.
James Bird posed online in chat rooms and on Skype as “Jamie.1” and asked the girl to lift her jumper on a web cam, Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court was told.
She refused but he told her what she was doing was sexually exciting him and, the following day, he contacted her online again when she told him she was with a boy.
He asked the two of them to kiss for him in view of the web cam, again saying it would sexually arouse him, while keeping his identity from them secret by saying his own camera was not working.
Again they refused and the girl’s mother discovered the online exchange when she examined her daughter’s mobile phone, came across her Skype conversations with Bird and called the police.
The 38-year-old, who the court was told had kept his £39,000-a-year digital strategist job despite his conviction, admitted inciting an underage girl into sexual activity.
In interview, he told detectives he had been accessing internet chat rooms to talk to younger women late at night after his wife and two children had gone to bed.
He told them he had been doing it for two years because the “intimate and physical” side of his marriage was lacking.
Now he has been ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for seven years and has been handed a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
John Hay, for Bird, said: “He fully accepts responsibility for what he has done. It is very serious, he understands that.
“He had a happy life with a wife and two children but there was an element that was not fulfilled and that was the intimate, physical side of his life.
“For two years, he was engaged in this activity where he would talk to younger women in chat rooms, looking to engage in stimulation.
“At the time of this offence, he thought the girl was an older age even though he could see a school uniform [on the web cam].
“He thought she might be underage and he let it overtake him.”
Peter Bettany, prosecuting, said the offending took place over two days in September 2014 where Bird was then living, in Turnberry Close, Ilkeston. The hearing was told he and his wife had now split up, were going through a divorce and that he now lived in Woodborough Road, Nottingham.
Mr Hay said: “He expressed remorse in interview and was very tearful.
“While going through the divorce proceedings, he has not been able to see his children and then there’s the public humiliation side of things.
“He is someone who is deeply ashamed, he is not a predatory paedophile.”
Bird was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge

Pervert jailed after being caught with 100’s of child abuse images
![perv]()
A child-abuse images pervert with previous convictions has been jailed after he was caught with an indecent movie and hundreds of indecent images.
Derby Crown Court heard on Monday, January 11, how Robert Stringer, 61, of Byron Street, Buxton, admitted possessing 650 indecent images, an indecent movie and an indecent photo of a different category and he also breached an order banning him from using mobiles with internet.
Prosecuting barrister Abi Joyce said: “Stringer was convicted in March, 2009, for possession of indecent photos and he got a 12 month prison sentence and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for ten years.
“The order included banning him from the possession of any computer with a facility of displaying images.
“On May 11, 2012, he was found guilty of breaching the Sexual Offender Prevention Order by being in possession of a computer and he received a community order.
“The conditions of the SOPO were varied to prohibit him from using any device capable of accessing the internet unless it had the capacity to retain internet history.
“Stringer was subject to checks and in January, 2013, he was found guilty of making photos of children and received a three-year community order.”
Despite Stringer’s previous convictions, Miss Joyce explained how Stringer’s offender manager became aware of information that he had a mobile phone in August, 2015, and he was seen using it while driving and it was identified.
The court heard how police attended Stringer’s address and he failed to declare the phone but officers identified the make of phone, called it successfully and established it had an internet plan.
The defendant told police he committed the latest offences because he was annoyed at the accusations and thought he might as well do it and as he looked at adult porn sites they would piggy-back to teen sites with 14 to 18-year-olds.
He stated to police that he felt guilty because he has daughters but he denied being sexually attracted to children.
Stringer pleaded guilty to breaching a SOPO by possessing a mobile with internet between October, 2013 and September, 2015. He also pleaded guilty to possessing an indecent photo of a child and an indecent movie and 650 indecent images between June and September, 2015.
Defence barrister James Riley urged the court to consider a suspended prison sentence to allow Stringer to work with probation and police to overcome problems.
But Judge Jonathan Bennett sentenced Stringer to 12 months of custody.
He told the defendant: “You demonstrated calculated defiance and your case is aggravated by previous convictions.
“You have made little progress and you didn’t recognise that you have a significant problem.
“Custody is appropriate because of your calculated defiance and you have had two community orders and you made no progress and you have carried on offending.”
The court heard how the movie and images included youngsters aged around 13 and 14 to 16.

Pervert pensioner pleads guilty to child abuse images
![price]()
A pensioner downloaded indecent images of children and extreme pornography after becoming isolated following the death of his son, a court heard.
John Price, 69, of Nottingham Road, Ilkeston, pleading guilty to possession of 26 photos and videos stored on his computer, ranging from the most serious, Category A, to Category C.
Price was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Friday. Prosecuting, Robert Sandford, said: “In September 2014 police officers attended Mount Pleasant Court in Grindleford. They recovered a laptop, computer tower, six usb memory sticks. These were subsequently examined and the images were discovered.”
They included: 12 category A movies and two images, five category B movies and two images, and three category C movies and four images.
He also hade more than 200 images of extreme pornography.
When interviewed by police, Price admitted the offence and said he got them from at least one website. There was no evidence that he had shared the images or videos.
Defending, Pamela Coxon, said: “He worked his whole life and retired at 60. His 34-year-old son died in 2009 while away in America. This caused him distress and appears to have had an effect on his mental health. He found himself lonely and isolated, living alone and depressed”
She said he had previously had three long-term relationships: “He started looking at dating websites and pop-ups led from one thing to another. He accepts he developed an unhealthy interest over a four year period.”
Judge Nirmal Shant QC sentenced Price to a three year community order, with supervision, and a community sex offenders group work programme. He will also have to sign the sex offenders register for five years.

Man jailed for passing on indecent images of children for the second time
![derby]()
A Derbyshire pervert got two years jail for passing on child abuse photos – just as he did for an identical offence in 2007.
Glyn Roberts, 52, defied a court order which banned him using the internet at home, a court heard on Monday.
He was caught by police after using a phone to download images from the internet and exchanging some, said Kevin Jones, prosecuting.
He co-operated with officers who found 260 images in the most serious category, said Kevin Jones, prosecuting. Movies were also discovered.
Warehouse worker Roberts of Beech Avenue, Alfreton, pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing images. He also admitted breach of an order barring use of the internet away from work.
Recorder Helen Malcolm QC told him: “The most serious and significant is you distributed it to other people. It seems that with making, possessing and distributing I am constrained to send you back to prison.
“You had a Sexual Offences Prevention Order before, began again and continued for a couple of years with precisely the same behaviour,” she said at Nottingham Crown Court. She urged Roberts to get help in tackling the problem.
The recorder heard that Roberts was in court in February 2007 for 17 offences of having indecent images and distributing them. The prison sentence was two years.
James Horne, mitigating, said Roberts had been extremely helpful to police and told the court: “He went over and above the information the officers had available at the time they were asking questions.
“He tried to identify other people he had been in contact with.”
Because his initial prison term was under three years, Roberts could not be enrolled for a course which helps offenders avoid committing child porn offences.
But he had asked to be allowed to undergo the rehabilitation and had been able take part in the opening section of the work. He lived with his sister and had been hit hard by her death, which left him feeling lonely.
Mr Horne urged the recorder to put Roberts on a three-year programme run by probation officers, rather than send him back to prison. It would be “no soft option.”
He told the court: “In the long run, it will be for the benefit of society to address the issues of his offending behaviour.”
Roberts had written a letter outlining his “regret, remorse and shame,” added Mr Horne. All the porn and equipment must be destroyed.

Derbyshire sex offender is jailed for deleting internet search history – again
![jailed sex offender John Pilkington, Long Eaton]()
A CONVICTED sex offender breached a court order just weeks after being released from prison.
John Pilkington, 77, was originally in court for “sexual matters” in the 1980s and 1990s, Derby Crown Court was told.
In March last year, he was given a community order for possessing indecent images of children.
He was told he must obey a sexual harm prevention order, which included not possessing any software that could delete his internet search history.
Pilkington, of Rush Leys, Long Eaton, first breached the order in June by installing a “cleaner” on his computer, the court was told. He was given a 28-day prison sentence and released on October 22.
But, when police went to the defendant’s home on November 25, they discovered he had installed another “cleaner” on his computer.
Jailing Pilkington for four months, Judge Nirmal Shant QC said: “You cleaned your computer, ensuring that nobody was then able to follow the history of what you had been searching.
“It came shortly on the heels of having served 28 days for exactly the same thing.”
Pilkington admitted breaching a sexual harm prevention order.
Simon Stevens, in mitigation, said Pilkington had told him that he had “poor memory” and sometimes “poor comprehension”.
However, Judge Shant said she did not accept this was the case.
She said: “I take the view it was a deliberate breach. You knew exactly what you were doing.
“And you must understand the way the court enforces such orders is by taking any breach very seriously indeed.”
Mr Stevens told the courts that the Community Sex Offender Group Work Programme Pilkington had been ordered to attend in March last year had not yet begun and so his client had not yet had the benefit of any of the help.
Judge Shant instructed that, when Pilkington was released from prison, he would continue on the community order.

‘Campaign of rape’ stole step-daughter’s childhood
A pervert who carried out a “campaign of rape” against his former step-daughter when she was a child has been locked up for 13 years.
Garry Knowles (40) was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday for sexually assaulting Katherine Barnes. He had been convicted by unanimous jury verdict at a week-long trial last month.
Knowles, formerly of Green Close, Unstone, had denied the 12 charges relating to repeated acts of anal rape committed between May 1992 and May 1998.
Katherine (23), who has waived her right to lifelong anonymity to encourage victims of other abusers to come forward, welcomed the sentence.
Speaking after the case, she said: “It’s a good result for what I’ve been through.
“It doesn’t give me the lost years back but now this weight is off my shoulders and I’ve got justice for what happened, the rest of my years will be easier.
“He’ll get out one day but I’ve got memories for life. It’s always going to be there.”
The jury had heard how Knowles, who was married to Katherine’s mum, Diane, raped his former step-daughter up to three times a week for five years, starting when she was eight.
Passing the 13-year prison sentence, recorder Yvonne Coen QC said the offences could be regarded as a “campaign of rape” against the victim.
She said Knowles devised a series of degrading punishments to keep his victim in a climate of fear.
Miss Coen added: “Katherine was entitled to look to you for your love and protection. Instead you used her to satisfy your perverted sexual desires repeatedly over those years.
“What you did to young Katherine was a monstrous abuse of the trust placed in you as her step-father.”
Katherine did not report the abuse to the police until 2006 – Knowles having drummed it into her that she would not be believed.
It was the birth of her two daughters that prompted Katherine, who is now known by her maiden name Preece, to make a formal complaint.
She urged other victims of sexual abuse to contact the police, adding: “I would advise anyone else who is hiding to come forward because I don’t want others to feel like I did.
“The case is closed now. I want to get on with my life and just be happy for once.”
Knowles, who has been living in Driffield, North Humberside, was given an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which bans him from residing and working with children, and he will be listed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Dawn Pritchard, who had defended Knowles, said her client still vehemently denied the offences and had no previous convictions of a sexual nature. She added: “He is a normal, hard-working man.”
Miss Coen said what Knowles did to Katherine not only caused her physical pain but also ‘untold psychological damage’.
She added: “Even now you deny it and have shown no remorse whatsoever for the terrible wrong-doing you did to that girl.”

Paedophile ring member GRANTED BAIL after admitting sex attack on Rotherham girl aged under 13 years old
A man who was part of a paedophile ring has been GRANTED BAIL after admitting a sex attack on a Rotherham girl who was aged under 13 years old.
Amjad Ali, aged 37, of Broad Lane, Hodthorpe, on the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border, pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse with a girl in Rotherham between 2000 and 2001.
He admitted the offence at Sheffield Crown Court and was granted bail until his sentencing hearing.
The other four defendants deny all the charges they face, which include child rape, false imprisonment and indecent assault on a child.
Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Martin Tate said: “We built a significant case against Ali, leading to his guilty plea at court.
“This is no consolation, however, to the abuse the victim experienced at his hands.
“This forms part of our ongoing commitment to tackle child sexual exploitation in our region.”
